Woodlands South MRT and the Thomson-East Coast Line

Woodlands South, station code TE3, is the closest rail station to the Woodlands Drive 17 land parcel where Clovelle of Woodlands is planned, roughly 490 metres away. It opened in January 2020 as part of the second stage of the Thomson-East Coast Line, and it changed the way the southern half of Woodlands connects to the rest of Singapore.

What the line does

The Thomson-East Coast Line runs from Woodlands North in the north to Bayshore in the east, and its central section is what makes it useful from here. Southbound from Woodlands South the train calls at Springleaf, Lentor, Mayflower, Bright Hill, Upper Thomson, Caldecott and Stevens before reaching Napier, Orchard Boulevard and Orchard, then Great World, Havelock, Outram Park, Maxwell, Shenton Way, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay.

The significance is the absence of interchanges. Before the line opened, a trip from southern Woodlands to Orchard meant the North-South Line and a walk or a change; now it is one train. Outram Park connects to the East-West and North East lines, Caldecott to the Circle Line, and Marina Bay to the North-South and Downtown lines, so the transfer options are good where a transfer is still needed.

Northbound: one stop and two

One stop north is Woodlands, the interchange with the North-South Line and the station serving Causeway Point and Woodlands Regional Centre. Two stops north is Woodlands North, the terminus, which is where the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link will begin. What this means for a household at Woodlands Drive 17

Realistically, a walk of six to seven minutes to the platform, then a single-seat ride to the central business district or Orchard. Journey times vary with the time of day and the exact destination, but the practical effect is that a Woodlands address no longer carries the commute penalty it did a decade ago. For a family, the more valuable part may be the reverse direction: a teenager at a school along the Thomson corridor travels independently without a transfer.
